Nicolás Otamendi has broken the record at Benfica for the first time, becoming the first player to score in both European and continental competitions.
The 21-year-old winger from Spain scored the winning goal in the 88th minute of a 1-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday night, making him the first player in history to do so twice. Otamendi's goal was also his first international hat-trick, as he scored against Costa Rica in the final match of the Copa América.
"I'm really happy," Otamendi said after the game. "It was a great experience playing with such talented players like Ronaldo, Mbappe and Kylian Mbappé. It's something I've been working hard towards all season."
Otamendi is known for his ability to create scoring opportunities and his versatility off the ball, but he had not scored in Europe until Saturday night. He started the match by scoring a header that led to a corner kick, which Otamendi converted into a winner.
"I felt like I could do it," Otamendi said. "I knew I had the chance, I just needed to make sure I executed my game plan correctly."
Otamendi's performance helped Benfica secure their first win in Europe this season, and he will now be looking to continue his success on the international stage. The Spaniard has already earned several caps for Portugal and has shown great promise for future success in Europe.
"We're very excited about Nicolás," manager Marcelino de Almeida said. "He's one of the best young players in Europe right now. We have big things planned for him."
